CE Requirements – Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

Annual Requirements

All RICS professionals are required to complete 20 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) each calendar year, including a minimum of 10 hours of formal (structured) learning.

Additionally, all members must undertake learning related to the RICS Global Professional and Ethical Standards at least once every three years.

Formal vs. Informal CPD

RICS recognizes a wide variety of learning formats, allowing members to tailor their CPD to their professional needs.

Formal CPD

Formal CPD refers to structured learning that has clear learning objectives and outcomes. Examples include:

• Professional courses
• Structured online training
• Technical authorship
• Training with an assessment component
• Self-managed learning with clearly defined outcomes

Informal CPD

Informal CPD refers to unstructured, self-managed learning relevant to a member’s professional role. Examples include:

• Private study
• On-the-job training
• Informal seminars or knowledge-sharing sessions

Ineligible Activities

Activities not tied to learning outcomes or professional relevance—such as social events, general networking, or internal meetings—do not count toward CPD.

Ethics Requirement

At least once every three years, members must complete training related to RICS Global Professional and Ethical Standards. Options include:

• Reviewing official ethics guidance at www.rics.org/ethics
• Completing formal ethics training from RICS or other providers
• Completing the RICS Professionalism Module (qualifies for 3 hours of formal CPD)

Reporting Requirements

Members must log their CPD activities on the RICS online system by 31 January of the year following the CPD year. CPD entries must include the learning type, hours, and relevance to professional practice.

Audit & Penalties

RICS monitors compliance via the online portal and may share data with regulated employers. Non-compliance may lead to disciplinary action:

• First breach: caution recorded for 10 years
• Second breach: £150 fine (rising to £250 for late payment) and public listing of non-compliance
• Third breach: referral to a disciplinary panel, with possible expulsion

Course Eligibility

Courses listed on LearnFormula may qualify as formal CPD if they include structured learning with clear objectives and outcomes. Final determination of eligibility is the responsibility of the individual member.

CPD is defined as any ongoing activity that develops professional knowledge, skills, and competence. It is not limited to formal qualifications but also includes informal and on-the-job learning.

Examples of accepted CPD activities include:

• Completing training courses or formal qualifications (e.g., wiring regulations updates, EV installation)
• Attending webinars, conferences, seminars, or toolbox talks
• Reading trade publications, technical journals, or online resources
• Engaging with professional bodies, mentoring apprentices, or giving presentations
• Using technical helplines, researching new technologies, or shadowing senior electricians

CPD Recordkeeping:

Electricians must maintain a CPD record showing activities undertaken, hours completed, and outcomes. Records demonstrate competence to employers, clients, or regulators and may be required to show evidence of meeting minimum CPD obligations.

The MyECS portal and app allow electricians to log CPD activities, download a CPD report, and track compliance. Only relevant qualifications required for ECS card applications are verified by the JIB; other CPD activities are self-declared but remain important for professional development.

Businesses certified by the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) are required to demonstrate engagement in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

There is no fixed minimum number of CPD hours. Instead, NICEIC places emphasis on ensuring that businesses and their staff consistently dedicate time to learning and development in order to remain competent, up to date with industry changes, and aligned with Electrotechnical Assessment Scheme (EAS) requirements.

CPD expectations include:

• CPD activities must be relevant to professional practice in electrical installation, gas, plumbing, or heating work.
• Activities can be formal or informal and should be regularly recorded.
• Examples of acceptable CPD include attending webinars, listening to podcasts, reading professional journals such as Connections, engaging with accredited training resources, and participating in industry events or technical seminars.

Recordkeeping and Assessment:

Each NICEIC-certified business is required to maintain CPD records for staff. These records will be checked by NICEIC assessors during the annual assessment process. Businesses may use NICEIC’s template CPD record or maintain their own internal system, provided it clearly documents activities, dates, and outcomes.
